Our class all particpated in the Terry Fox run today to help raise money for cancer research. We spent time this week learning more about Terry Fox and how he was an extraordinary person. We included some mapping in our learning about Terry Fox by coloring a map of Canada and drew a line to show where Terry Fox ran. We had one student from each class wear a step tracker to see how far we ran/walked/jogged today. The students were asked to try and figure out a way to find the average of how far we ran as a class. We have 20 students in each class. Mrs. Cooper's class averaged 2.17 km and Mr. Neiger/Miss Kowal's class averaged 2.4 1km. If each student in Mrs. Cooper's class ran 2.17 km, how many km did we run as a whole class? If each student in Mr. Neiger/Miss Kowal's class ran 2.41 km, how many km did we run as a whole class. Students were challenged to find the answer to these questions. We reminded them to show us how they got their answer.
There are field trip forms for the Calgary Tower in your child's backpack. We have booked it for October 18th for the day as part of our work around building and building materials. Please complete the forms and send payment either by cash, cheque or online. We will require 5 volunteers for each class so if you are able to volunteer and have your police clearance please email your child's teacher to let us know. Thank you! We have started word work and students will have a weekly list of words that they will use to do a variety of word work activities. There will also be weekly sight words. Please see the list of words that we are using next week. Each student knows what list they are doing. We did a spelling assessment this week to determine what list each student should work with. Please see the list of spelling words below: Sight Words: with, from, have, what, were

Auburn Bay School is, once again, partnering with the Calgary Food Bank this October to help fight hunger in our community. We believe in a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. We can all play a part in helping the more than 900,000 Canadians who rely on their local food banks every month. The Auburn Bay School We Scare Hunger Campaign begins Monday, October 1st and we invite you to be a part of the change our students are working hard to create. Students have been asked to bring in food bank items throughout the next month. Our school goal last year was to bring in 600 pounds of food. We brought in 1560 pounds of food! This year our school goal is to collect 1600 pounds of food! Together we can make a difference. Thank You, The staff and students of Auburn Bay School We have a few upcoming field trips that we will need parent volunteers for. On October 18, we are going to the Calgary Tower and would need 5 volunteers from each class. Mr. Negier and Miss Kowal's Class have their Open Minds coming up the week of October 29th and will require 5 volunteers per day. If you are able to volunteer please email your teacher to let them know ASAP.
Parents will require a police clearance to volunteer. If you do not have your police clearance and would like to volunteer please drop in at the office to begin the process. Toonies for Terry
Auburn Bay School will be participating in the Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 28. As we lead up to our run, classes will be working towards increasing their stamina in Phys Ed while fundraising money for cancer research. Please bring in Toonies for Terry to your classroom teacher as we spread cancer awareness. On the day of the run, it is important that students wear appropriate outside shoes for walking/running along with dressing appropriately for the weather that day. Parents are welcome to join us for this event out on the soccer field at 11:15 AM on Friday, September 28th. The Terry Fox Run will last approximately 15 minutes and students will line up with their homeroom classes to go back inside for the remainder of the morning when we have finished. We kindly ask parents to wait outside while this is happening and to pick up your child from their normal dismissal spot. We watched a great short video about Growth Mindset today and the students created speech bubbles with growth mindset statements auch as " My effort and attitude make all the difference", "I persevere when I am frustrated", "I can always improve" . We have created a visuual journal page about our mistakes and growth mindset. Parent/Teacher Conferences are next Thursday evening and Friday morning so parents can book online starting Sunday morning. Please note that students in Mr. Neiger and Miss Kowal's class should book under Mr. Neiger. These conferences are an opportunity for you to tell us more about your child as a learner. The students are settling into the daily routines and we are beginning to move forward with our grade 3 work. This week the students are working on writing letters to their future self that they we will open and read at the end of the year. We have also been exploring things that we can do and things that we aren't doing yet. The students are finishing a visual journal page that includes a list of things they can do and things they can't do yet and they are using these ideas to set goals to start the year..
In math, the students are exploring number sense using base ten blocks. Today we worked in groups to represent 3-digit numbers using standard form and base ten blocks to work on gaining a better understanding of place value. Additionally, we have been practicing explaining our mathematical thinking orally. The students have been having fun exploring photography using the ipads. We have been working on forced perspective photography and students took pictures of each other using various props to make the picture interesting. Dear Parents,
We want to take this opportunity to welcome you to grade 3. Mr. Neiger, Miss Kowal and Mrs. Cooper have big plans for our grade 3 students. We are really hoping to make this year one of possibilities, wonder and growth. Our plan is to make your child’s learning experiences rich and meaningful. This will involve field trips, special guests, and hands-on learning. We are very excited that we will be participating in an Open Minds program, Tinker School for a week. A week at Tinker School will enable students to increase their skills using new technology like coding and robotics, while fostering critical thinking and creative problem solving skills. Students will be immersed in science, technology, engineering and math to innovate and solve different challenges. These experiences will develop and build capacity for the future as students gain critical skills in the STEM fields. Mr. Neiger/Miss Kowal go to Tinker School Oct.29 - Nov.2 and Mrs. Cooper’s class goes April 8 -12. We will require 5 volunteers each day for Tinker School so please mark these dates on your calendar if you can volunteer. Volunteers are required to have their security clearance completed and in the office as well the school based volunteer orientation session. Our classroom BLOG and website are up and running so please check this for daily updates on what we have done in class, as well as links to websites and upcoming events. The link is on the front cover on your child’s blue folder. You can also access every classroom BLOG via our school website. School Webpage: http://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/auburnbay/Pages/default.aspx A blue communication folder has been sent home. It is an expectation that this will be sent home every day regardless of it having something in it or not. This is for the sole purpose of allowing you the opportunity to insert notes, a means of having my e-mail address for communication purposes (email us anytime you have a question or concern). Please help your child set up a system where they take it out to show you after school but also ensure that it is in their backpack before they come to school the next day. We are hoping these folders will last the year and although they are plastic they are not waterproof and should not be bent if possible. Home reading continues to be very important in grade 3. We do not send books home with students but ask that all students read for at least 15 minutes a day. The public library is a great place to get books for your child to enjoy reading at home. If your child has any appointments throughout the year, is being picked up by someone else, or will be going on any extended holidays…please email in advance notifying us so that we are aware. It is also appreciated if you could email the office as well at: [email protected]. We are looking forward to an amazing year of learning with our grade 3 class. |
