The students have been working on writing a letter to their future self. Mr. Neiger will mail these letters out to the students when they are at the end of grade 9. It is really exciting for the students to receive a letter that they wrote themselves and to see how they have grown and changed. In order to do this, we are asking students to bring their mailing address to school by Monday so they can put their address on an envelope. Please help your child write the address on a piece of paper and put it in their folder by Monday. Thank you

A few students have homework to finish their Wonder journal entry. Students wrote 3-4 paragraphs describing some struggles that August has experienced and how he handled the difficult times. For the last paragraph, students were asked to make a personal connection by describing a time they struggled and how they got through it. Ask your child to describe some of the struggles August has had in the book Wonder. In Science the students have been working on creating an animal that has adaptations to survive in different climates. They were assigned an environment and then they brainstormed and created a written plan for a new animal that could survive the climate. Students worked on sketching what their animal looks like. In math, the students have been working on measurement. They were introduced to perimeter and have been practicing measuring the perimeter of different objects. Students will be working on various art projects in Social Studies to represent the 4 countries we have studied this year, Peru, Ukraine, India and Tunisia. Today, we started doing the background for a Peru Llama art using oil pastels. Please see our new spelling list for this week . We are back at our routine with our word work again this weekTuesday June 4th BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY
Students are encouraged to ride their bikes! We may have lots and lots of bikes so here is the plan for a safe and orderly day! Please allow extra time to arrive to the school as to allow time to park your child’s bike. Kindergarten will park their bikes on the bike racks and fence closest to the kindergarten doors (a lock is required) Helmets will go with the student to their classrooms. Grade 4 will park their bikes on the bike racks and fence at the front of the school (a lock is required). Helmets will go with the student to their classrooms. Grade 1-3 will park their bikes in the gym. Students will enter the gym from the compound. Teachers will be directing the students as to where to park their bikes in the gym. These bikes do not need to be locked. Again, please allow for extra time at the end of the day to help your child with their bike. We are excited to see how many students ride their bike on this day and appreciate all your support in this. From the Music Room: I am so excited to announce the Third Annual Auburn Bay School Talent Show. We have so many talented students so let’s get out there and share it with each other. Because of all the talent at our school we are splitting the talent show into two different events. This upcoming talent show on Wednesday, June 12th @ 12:45pm will be for thegrade 1 and 3’s ONLY. Everyone is super excited to share all of their talents with their peers, they have been asking since the first day of school. I will be holding mini talent shows during music class the week of June 3 - 6 . Exact dates and times of your students can be found on your child’s classroom blog as well as the music blog. From these mini talent shows we will choose some students to perform in a larger talent show in front of the entire school. You will be informed with a note from Mrs. Bourgeois if your child has been chosen for the large talent show. Performers must have their costumes, props, music etc. at school the date of their mini talent show. There will only be one music class set aside for each class for the mini talent shows so all materials MUST be at school that day, we will not have make up days. If your student requires music you will need to send in a labeled USB, music link to Mrs. Bourgeois, iPOD or labelled CD. The mini talent shows will be for students who have practiced and have a polished performance. This is not a time for making things up on the spot or improvising. Things that can be considered for the talent show (but not limited to):
Auburn Bay is a large school with many talented students and so not everyone will be able to perform in the large talent show. The mini talent shows will allow every student to showcase their talent to a peer group. Please ensure you have a conversation with your child so they are aware that not everyone will be performing in the large talent show. I will also be having a conversation with every student around this as well. I am very excited to see and hear all the performances. If you have any questions please feel free to email me[email protected] Reminder that the volunteer tea is this Thursday, May 30. Please reminder to RSVP! Sports day is on Friday, May 31. Please help your child to remember to dress for the weather. Some students are bringing home their math book today to complete their bar graph assignment. Once their data has been represented on their bar graph they are writing 4 questions about their graph and showing the answers (examples: how many more people liked ____ than ____? or which animal had the most votes?)
This work is to be complete today (May 22) and returned to school tomorrow (May 23) We do not have new words for word work this week. We are focusing on a new writing project that connects with both Science and Social Studies. We started it today by reading Diary of a Fly. The students choose an animal from the country they are researching to write a Diary about. Part of this project involves researching about the animal so we will begin that work this week.
We started our observations and sketching of the life cycle of a butterfly. Our butterflies are at the caterpillar stage. In math, we are working on fractions. Ask your child what they know so far about fractions. We did a problem solving assessment with the students today. We are looking for students being able to choose an efficient strategy, show their work with pictures, numbers and words, and explain how they solved the problem. We are also looking for math work done in an organized manner. In Social Studies we are continuing to work on our I'm taking my camera to ________ google slide. Students need to have completed the pages up to and including the food one by Wednesday. The powerpoint for the slides is on the last blog entry. When using Learn Alberta at home, your child may require a username and password which can be found on the links tab. Our new list of words for this week is below. We are focusing on 'ed' and 'ing' word endings. |
