Students learned a new game today that allows them to practice their subtraction with regrouping strategies. Try the game this weekend as a family, have your child explain how they get their answer and their strategy. Have fun!

The students are working on writing complete sentences that begin with a capital and end with a period. Each sentence needs to have a none, adjective, and verb. We also talked about having only one idea in the sentence so that it is not a "run on" sentences. Some students are still working on completing their sentence and will have their journal in their folder to finish it tonight.
Please see the word work list below for the words we are working on this week. Some students need to complete their sort and record for tomorrow. In addition we have our weekly sight words which are: different, again, great, every, between. Here are some links of games that students can play at home to practice their math:
The following links are on Learn Alberta, you will need to login: User Name: LA06 Password: 4105 Subtraction http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/me3us/flash/lessonLauncher.html?lesson=lessons/07/m3_07_00_x.swf Addition http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/me3us/flash/lessonLauncher.html?lesson=lessons/06/m3_06_00_x.swf Place Value http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/me3usa/flash/index.html?goLesson=4 Number Forms http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/me3us/flash/lessonLauncher.html?lesson=lessons/03/m3_03_00_x.swf This is another game that students are familiar with and can play at home to practice their problem solving and mental math: https://www.kenkenpuzzle.com/# Click on PLAY, then customize puzzle type/difficulty. We have been doing either addition or addition and subtraction puzzles. In class we are working on subtraction with 3 digit numbers. Students can practice this at home and know how to create their own questions that will require regrouping. We are learning strategies to use instead of the traditional algorithm with stacking numbers. Currently we are working on using Base 10 blocks (or drawings of them) to help us understand better. This helps us to better understand why we are doing each step as opposed to memorizing the procedure. We are also learning how to use addition to check our work. Additionally, we are holding a Family Math Fair on November 29th from 6-7. Teachers will be sharing many different ways that you can support your child at home through games and discussions. Parent/Teacher conferences are this Thursday and Friday. Please book online to meet with your child's teacher. Thursday is a half day and there is no school on Friday.
The students had an opportunity to explore our new Maker Space in the learning commons today. After reading the book, STUCK, the students were given the challenge to create something to get objects out of a high tree. The students planned their idea and then used various materials to begin building a structure. We have been mastering the drawing of Taj Mahal. Today we created posters that we will use to learn about Makey Makey to make our posters interactive. Word Work -Please see the list below for the new words the students are working on for word work this week. Join us on Thursday November 29th between 6 and 7 pm for a Family Math Fair! Teachers will be sharing fun ways that you can support your child's Mathematical development at home. Bring your phone so you can take pictures of your favorite activities! Please bring your children with you so they can try out these games and activities. No unattended children please. See you on the 29th!
This week we have been reviewing how to do 2 digit subtraction with regrouping. Students are applying their knowledge of place value using base 10 blocks to show their work and better understand what happens when we regroup. To support your child at home, work together to create your own questions, such as 64-27= and 51-39= Students are practicing showing their work by drawing a picture of the base 10 blocks. Once they have an answer, they are using addition to check their work. Here is an example: As a math warm up to practice our mental math, we played Totality. Many students are excited to teach their family how to play this game. All you need is a dice, a game piece and a piece of paper to show your work. Print off the below game board and have fun!
Finally, we have a Math Challenge Question that many students asked to work on at home.
"How many addition signs should be put between digits of the number 987654321 and where should we put them to get a total of 99?" Below is a our new words for this week. Students needed to write the list in their notebook and then complete a sort and record with their words. Students that did not complete this today need to complete it for homework tonight and return their notebook to school tomorrow.
We will begin working on our final projects tomorrow. We brainstormed for a list of ways that we could present our final projects(poster, research booklet, diorama, brochure, flip book, pop up book, slideshow). Ask your child what project they are planning to do.. For the students that want to create a diorama, they will need to bring a box about the size of a shoebox and some materials to create their diorama. We looked at examples as a whole class and talked about ideas for what they could use to make their projects. If your child wants to include color pictures on their project then they were asked to print these at home and bring tomorrow. We can only print black and white pictures.
A few students will need to finish their research at home tonight to be ready to work on the final project tomorrow. The Learn Alberta website link is above. The username for Learn Alberta is LA06 and the password is 4105. Students can also do a google search for their topic but may require adult support to find reliable websites. If your child has research to complete, it is very important that they bring their notebook back to school tomorrow. |
