If your child is in Mrs. Cooper's class, we will be doing a project next week that will require a few supplies. We are asking students to please bring a toilet paper roll, a soap box or a box similar in size and a small twig a bit taller than the toilet paper roll. Students can also bring any small decorations to add to their mini haunted house. The students will be using the Design Thinking Process to design and create a mini haunted house. We will be working on this Wednesday afternoon so students will require their supplies by Tuesday. Mr. Neiger/Miss Kowal's class will be at Tinker School next week so Mrs. Cooper's class will be doing a variety of projects throughout the week.
UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES Fun lunch is coming up on Wednesday, October 24th, Picture Re-take day is October 25th and there is no school next Friday, October 26th. HALLOWEEN Students are welcome to dress up for Halloween on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 31st. Please remember that costumes should be appropriate for school and that all pretend weapons and masks should be left at home. After Halloween, we are also asking that students please leave their Halloween treats at home and continue to bring healthy snacks and lunches for school. A very big thank you to our parent volunteers that helped out at our field trip to the Calgary Tower. It was a great field trip with a lot of learning about the history of the Calgary Tower and downtown buildings. We also learned a lot about strong materials and structures for building. The 802 stair climb was a great physical break in our day! The students persevered to the very top! Way to go grade 3 students. Mr. Neiger/Miss Kowal's class will be going to Tinker School next week so please ensure that your child has returned the required forms and have made payment. Students will be required to bring a snack, lunch and water bottle everyday. Mrs. Cooper's class will be working on 'Passion Projects" next week while Mr. Neiger/Miss Kowal's class is away at TInker School. Each student will choose a topic that they are passionate to learn more about and would like to be an expert to teach other students. We will follow the research/inquiry process and will have a final product to share with the other class by the end of the week. The students were introduced to the different types of bridges. Ask your child if they can name the 4 types of bridges. We will be working on creating a visual journal page this week to represent what we have learned about bridges. We have been introducing the students to a variety of reading stratefies during our daily read aloud. This week we are focusing on VISUALIZING - Making a Mental Image in your head. The students set up a page in their visual journal to sketch what they see as they listen to our read aloud "A FISH IN A TREE". In writing, the students have chosen a writing goal that they will work on during their daily writing. Some of the students have put these goals into IRIS. Ask your child what their writing goal is. There is no school on Friday, October 26 because it is a teacher PD day. Each day during our class Read Aloud we have been introducing the students to reading strategies that they can practice during Read to Self. We use the CAFE menu to sort our strategies. CAFE stands for comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expand vocabulary. Today we discussed the importance of knowing sight words to help with accuracy and fluency. The grade three sight word list is below. Students should read through the list and keep track of words they are still learning. Putting 5-10 sight words onto cards to play various games such as concentration, Go Fish, and BINGO are fun ways to learn sight words. Once your child recognizes those words quickly then they can choose 5-10 other words.
Some students have homework tonight to finish word work activities. We have been working on writing good sentences that include a who, what, where, when, why as well as an uppercase letter at the beginning and a period at the end. Students need to choose 5 words from their spelling list and write a good complete sentence for each ot those words. We also learned how to put our lsit into alphabetical order today. We are asking students that did not complete this in the time given yesterday and today to please complete it at home tonight and return it for tomorrow. Please remind your child to put the blue notebook back into their folder as soon as they are done and return it tomorrow. Thank you
Your child is also bringing home a form today that needs to be signed and returned before our field trip on October 18th. This form is required in order for students to participate in the stair climb that we will be doing while at the Calgary Tower. All students are expected to participate in the stairclimb unless there is a medical condition. The stairclimb is part of our physical activity for that day and also a great opportunity to presevere and feel a sense of accomplishment when we reach the end of the stairs. In Social Studies the students have been researching and learning about schools in other countries. We have been specifically looking at schools in Peru, Ukraine, Tunisia, and India. We have already discovered that there are many differences in schools arount the world. Getting to school can be much more difficult in other countries and not everyone gets to go to school. The students were introduced to a program called Scratch to prepare for our work at Tinker School. Students can explore this program at the below website: |
